About me

I have worked as a counsellor, group therapist, stress management practitioner and hypnotherapist for over twenty years. During that time I have sought to work to, and maintain, the highest standards of clinical and ethical practice and with this in mind I have always looked for training and supervision of the highest quality. I take great pride in my therapeutic work with clients and I always endeavour to give value for money and to give each client my whole-hearted commitment and support.

My therapeutic training & development

My first counselling training was in person-centred counselling which was developed by the American psychiatrist Carl Rogers. His major tenants of unconditional positive regard, congruence and empathy are, I believe, a good foundation for any relationship - especially a healing relationship like that between client and therapist.

Whilst training as a person-centred counsellor I also did a foundation year in gestalt therapy. Gestalt therapy utilises many concepts and techniques including the feelings, sensations and experiences that occur between the therapist and the client and the here-and-now moment to moment felt experiences of the client. Gestalt work also draws on the experimental use of art, poetry, music, bodily feelings and postures, archetypes, playfulness and seriousness. It is a rich form of psychotherapy that draws on many traditions and offers limitless possibilities for exploring human feelings and experience. I also completed a final year of gestalt training as part of my psychotherapy accreditation which included placements in the psychiatric sector.

When I began working with clients in groups I undertook a training course in creative group work skills. This exciting and interesting course introduced me to the rudimentary theories of a number of approaches to group work including gestalt therapy, transactional analysis, action therapies - body work and non-verbal communication, psychodrama and transpersonal psychology.

Because of my paramedical background I am keenly interested in how psychological ill-health affects us physiologically. With this in mind I trained, to diploma level, in stress management. Stress management looks at how stress affects us behaviourally, psychologically and physiologically. It incorporates a number of disciplines and skills including cognitive-behaviour and rational-emotive behaviour therapy, assertiveness and communication skills, psychometric assessment, health education, stress management training and relaxation training.

My most recent training was in clinical hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic programming which I completed in June 2009. I now offer these exciting and dynamic treatments as part of my overall client treatment plan.

I integrate all of my diverse therapeutic trainings and I bring all of them to bear on the healing relationship that I encourage and establish between myself and my clients.

A Rich Tapestry of Therapeutic Experience

Since 1992 I have worked variously as a counsellor, stress management practitioner, group therapist, cognitive-behaviour therapist, clinical counselling supervisor, trainer and as a psychotherapist.

My work at present is in private practice but I have worked in a number of public institutions and settings including a drug and alcohol therapeutic community, the prison service and a private charity specialising in the care of homeless individuals, a large number of whom had psychiatric conditions.

I have considerable experience of working with clients from a diverse range of corporate and industrial backgrounds including the insurance industry, engineering and manufacturing, civil aviation, local authority and legal services.

I am happy and content at present to work in private practice from my home in North Norfolk. I work with individuals and couples.
